An Caladh is a supremely comfortable home for 6 people in one of North West Scotland’s most dramatic and beautiful areas, the Assynt Peninsula. A detached house in the small village of Kylesku with stunning views over sea lochs and mountains, An Caladh means in Gaelic ‘safe harbour’ or ‘haven’ and is the perfect place to enjoy a haven of peace and beauty.
The house stands 50 yards from the water’s edge of Loch Glencoul with an active fishing jetty and 8 houses spread along the shore towards the delightful Kylesku hotel, 300 yards away, which has a cosy bar with wonderful local food.
It has 4 stars from Visit Scotland so is fitted out to a high standard with excellent facilities. Perfect to come home to after exploring all the beauty of the Highlands.
An Caladh was completely rebuilt in 2005/6 and as David and Sarah Bowen use it as a 2nd home it has been decorated and furnished to a very high standard. There is a vast selection of videos and DVDs, 2 hi fi systems, one for an iPod with dozens of CDs, and the sun lounge has a selection of exercise equipment for those who like to add to the good effect of the stunning walks, cycles, glorious sandy beaches, fishing, boating, bird-watching and all the other Highland activities which are available in the area.
Off-road parking for at least 4 cars behind the house and a terraced front garden with a large decking overlooking the loch add to the ease of enjoying An Caladh. Bedroom 1 has an ensuite bathroom and a balcony overlooking the loch - perfect for that 1st cuppa of the day!
Address : An Caladh Kylesku Sutherland IV27 4HW
Zip / Postal code : IV27 4HW
Kylesku is on the North West coast of the Highlands in Sutherland. It is 85 miles from Inverness, 33 miles north of Ullapool and 30 miles south of Durness on the North Coast. Despite the postal address being near Lairg it is 30 miles away, so do not look for Lairg on the map, rather look for Kylesku and Unapool
An Caladh is set 30 feet up a small hill just 50 yards from the loch shore.
This part of North West Sutherland is an area of exceptional geological interest.
Scourie to the north and Lochinver to the south offer shops, banks, garages and restaurants.
LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
Boat trips to the highest waterfall in the UK start from the slipway by the hotel
The famous bird sanctuary of Handa Island is only a few miles north.
Over the hill south to Unapool there is the Maryck Museum of Childhood - an interesting collection and great home-made cakes!
Ardvreck Castle is 7 miles south and is dated back to 1490 with fascinating historical connections and a beautiful outlook over Loch Assynt
We have a folder in the house of a selection of places of interest for day trips and visits
Beaches
There are some wonderful sandy, clean and beautiful beaches along the north-west and north coast of Sutherland.
Ones we like include:
Scourie Beach - the nearest to Kylesku with a large expanse of sand when the tide is out and lots of rock pools to explore. Great walks around the cliffs and rocks.
Sandwood Bay - if you are feeling energetic it is worth the 9 mile round trip from the car park. You park at Blairmore which is past Kinlochbervie and basically keep right on to the end of the road.
Our first trip to Sandwood Bay resulted in the sun coming out just as we arrived and glinting on the double bay with huge expanse of golden sand, sand dunes, rocks and nothing else but silence! Well worth it and we hope the weather is as kind to you as it was to us.
Achmelvich Bay - are we just lucky or what? Every time we go there the sun seems to shine. What a great beach - only a few miles from Lochinver and well worth taking a couple of hours there - or even longer - on your tour along the Lochinver Coastal Route. There are great cliff-top walks from the beach
Oldshoremore Bay - this is a secluded beach near the road just south of Sandwood Bay. The same sort of beauty without the walk.
Durness has the Craft Village and Smoo Caves as well as a fabulous beach and the most northerly golf course in the UK.
