Croquet on the lawn, carriage rides on the Somerset levels… there's more than a hint of the manor-born. Pass through sturdy red gates, leaving the sleepy village behind. In the same family for 400 years, this immaculate house is still carefully tended and overflows with family portraits and delicious antiques. Propped against the square Clementi piano (tuned to order) is a Victorian bowl used to bath baby on route home from India. The grand old drawing room is lined with cosy sofas and shiny brasses, a wood-burner and respectfully small TV. Alongside a library laden with 5,000 books sits a rich red dining room: magic in winter and flung open in summer. The Country Living kitchen has masses of gadgets and a bread maker for locally milled flour. A hamper of goodies awaits; local groceries can be delivered. Bathrooms are big and spotless, bedrooms warm and luxurious – some with fab views and tapestry touches. The little 'Pump Room' has a high 'Princess and the Pea' poster and Pooh's Corner, a special spot on the landing, has a couple of sofabeds, a lovely window seat and antique desk. Stride out over your 22 acres past the Ha Ha, scented rose beds and walled vegetable garden – given over to the inspirational Landshare scheme. Take an evening owl prowl, stargaze on top the Mendips or venture out to Glastonbury and Wells. We can sleep up to 16.
