Bay View is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty which is rich in history. Behind the cottage is the site of ancient burial chambers and hill forts.The National Trust house Plas yn Rhiw(1ml) dates in part back to the 15th century.The poet R.S.Thomas lived for many years in Rhiw and was vicar of the parish of Aberdaron.The church in Aberdaron has many reminders of his poetry.
Aberdaron was the final stop on the old pilgrim route to Bardsey.Today it is possible to take a day trip to the island(booking necessary).The big kitchen,Gegin fawr, is a good place to have a snack or a cup of tea.Two pubs and a cafe/takeaway also provide food.There is a Spar supermarket for basic needs ,including a Post Office, and a small bakery.
The beach at Aberdaron is pleasant and easily accessible and there are many other beaches within easy reach of Bay View. Porth Ysgo is reached by a walk from the car park and a descent of many steps so is never crowded.The beaches at Abersoch, Llanbedrog and Porth Oer are very popular and become crowded at peak holiday times.
Places to visit for a day trip include Portmeirion, Caernarvon, Porthmadog and the island of Anglesey.Portmeirion is an Italianate village used in several films and totally unique.The ancient castle of Caernarvon is traditionally where the Princes of Wales are crowned and also the site of the Roman castle of Segontium.Porthmadog is the starting point for a ride on the old steam railway with its original carriages which ends in Ffestiniog after travelling through the mountains.To reach the island of Anglesey you will cross one of the great road bridges.On the island are the National Trust house Plas Newydd and Newborough Sands both worth a visit.
There are several golf courses nearby including the acclaimed Nefyn(10ml), Abersoch(8ml), Pwllheli(12ml), Criccieth(20ml) and Porthmadoc(25ml).
