York is a medieval walled city built on top of a Roman City, Eboracum, first built in around AD71. On 1 November 866 the Vikings invaded the city and settled, renaming it Jorvik and it became their Capital in England and a very important trading centre.
The city's 3 mile long medieval city walls were built in the 1200s and the city has 18 medieval churches as well as Jacobean and Georgian architecture and several museums.
Attractions include the York Minster, National Railway Museum, Castle Museum, Yorkshire Museum, the War Bunker and the world famous Jorvik Centre.
Further afield and within about an hour's drive of York there is Castle Howard, Selby Abbey, Eden Camp War Museum, the Royal Armouries, Pickering Steam Railway, Flamingoland as well as the seaside resorts of Scarborough, Whitby and Bridlington.
