Bideford, North Devon, is a delightful small market town on the banks of the river Torridge. Charles Kingsley referred to it in his book “Westward Ho!” as “The little white town”. Westward Ho! with it’s fine beach is just two and a half miles from the town and the beach at Instow is about the same distance. Visitor attractions include the adventure parks “The Milky Way” and “The Big Sheep”. The “Atlantic Village” factory outlet shopping centre is on the outskirts of the town which boasts two supermarkets, Morrisons and Asda. Many visitors like to visit the Burton Art Gallery and the adjoining Victoria Park with it’s play area for children. The quaint village of Appledore can be found on the way to Westward Ho! A little further along the coast lies the picturesque fishing village of Clovelly with it’s famous cobbled streets leading down to the harbour where you can enjoy a drink and a meal at the “Red Lion”. There is a landrover service to take you back up if you don’t fancy the climb! In the other direction is the larger shopping town of Barnstaple with it’s Leisure Centre, Ten Pin Bowling, Karting etc. and this is the way to the popular beaches of Saunton, Croyde and Woolacombe. Barnstaple and Bideford are linked by the “Tarka Trail” which was created from the former railway line. This extends for a distance of around 20 miles and is very popular with walkers and cyclists as a means of enjoying the beautiful countryside off the beaten track and away from traffic. Many of our visitors bring their own cycles, but alternatively they may be hired at very reasonable cost from the hire shop on the Trail. North Devon enjoys easy access to both Exmoor and Dartmoor. Exmoor is often associated with R.D..Blackmore’s book “Lorna Doone” and the beautiful Brendon Hills and the Doone Valley are beautiful places and well worth a visit. Dartmoor with it’s high tors and steeply wooded valleys covers a huge area and is very popular with visitors.
So all in all, Bideford is an ideal place to begin to explore the whole northern area of Devon
