There's nothing nicer on a summer's day than to sit outside a canalside pub in Brecon, nursing a cold beer, and watching life glide by. Brecon is a bustling market town beautifully placed at the foot of the Brecon Beacons Natioanal Park and on the banks of the river Usk. The once industrial Monmouthshire and Brecon canal has become a paradise for tourists.
Brecon's main attraction has become the annual Jazz Festival in August which brings together top performers from all over the world and holds 50 concerts in three days at venues dotted about the town. These venues include Theatre Brycheinion which hosts dance, music and theatre all year round. There is also an annual four day Baroque Festival inspired by the Georgian heritage of the town.
The town also claims to have the biggest leisure centre in Wales. It's surrounded by the rolling hills, moorland and ancient woodlands of the National Park. Many of the park activities can be booked or researched at the tourist office in Brecon, with event such as mountain biking on dedicated paths, or a day of walking on the Beacons way. A busy farmers' market, with products to rival many continental markets, is held in the market hall on the second Saturday of every month. For information on the history and natural history of Brecon and its surroundings there is Brecknockshire Museum. The town is surrounded by many romantic castle ruins with, perhaps Carreg Cennen, beding the most spectacular.
