When you drive in to Rannoch and Tummel from Pitlochry, along the Road to the Isles, you are entering a very special part of Highland Perthshire. Killiecrankie and Garry Bridge, past Queen’s View on Loch Tummel, Kinloch Rannoch on to Rannoch Moor, although only a couple of hours from Edinburgh, you experience one of the most beautiful and remote parts of Scotland. You are on the edge of a wilderness. Rannoch Station, on Rannoch Moor, is not only famous for its Harry Potter connections but a geologist’s paradise with its glacial remains. The West Highland rail line from the south to Fort William, then Mallaig where the ferry leaves for Skye, is stunning.
Dall Mill itself is situated on the edge of the Blackwood of Rannoch, one of the best remaining examples of Ancient Caledonian Pine Forest where it is possible to walk. Local wildlife includes red squirrel, pine martin, red and roe deer and over 70 different species of birds many of which can be seen from the house. Loch Rannoch has unique species of Arctic Charr, fish which developed following the last ice age. You can fish from the shore at Dall Mill and fishing permits can be obtained to fish for brown trout, charr and pike.
Highland Perthshire known as Big Tree Country is not only renowned for its beautiful scenery, tranquil glens, and gentle walking but as a destination for extreme sports such as bungee jumping, rafting, and climbing mountains, Munro such as Scheihallion and Ben Lawers. There are a number of geo-caching sites in our area; bikes and canoes can be hired. After a tough day of cycling, walking or fishing Dall Mill is the ideal place to relax.
Kinloch Rannoch has a good local shop, post office, cafe, pubs and hotels which provide a fine selection of Perthshire food such as Rannoch Smokery meat. Pitlochry, Aberfeldy and the House of Bruar some 45 minutes away offer a good mix of shops.
Within an hour and a half’s drive of Dall Mill you can reach Aviemore, Blair Castle, Castle Menzies, Dunkeld with its cathedral and Scone Palace. The Festival Theatre known as the Theatre in the Hills in Pitlochry is world renowned. On Loch Tay there is a reconstruction of an ancient loch dwelling at The Crannog Centre and an opportunity to take a Highland Safari into the hills. With several distilleries such as Aberfeldy, Dalwhinnie, and Edradour nearby as well as a microbrewery at Moulin there is something for everyone.
