Property description
The castle has 1900 acres of gardens, meadow and woodland. The lake and surrounding area is a Nature Reserve with abundant wildlife.
The castle, which was built around a 14th century Pele tower given by King Robert the Bruce to the Earl of Moray, was bought for William Hay of Drummelzier by his father the Earl of Tweedale in 1696. The Hay family have lived there in unbroken succession ever since.
The Hays have considerably enlarged and embellished the building into its final Gothic Revival form, designed and completed by the celebrated architect James Gillespie Graham between 1818 and 1822.
Duns law on the estate is the historic scene of the Scottish Covenanters rising against King Charles 1 in 1639 under General Leslie, who was quartered in the Castle.
The first Mrs. Hay of Duns Castle was a descendant of Mary Seton, a lady-in-waiting to Mary, Queen of Scots, so the house has strong Stuart connections.

Area description
Duns Castle is situated on the edge of the small market town of Duns. We have many local attractions such as cafe's, resteraunts and bars. There are two supermarkets, two newsagents, two chinese take-aways, two fish and chip shops, a pharmacy and gift shops.
in Duns there is the Jim Clark Room which was established in the memory of the late formula one racing driver. There is also the annual Jim Clark Memorial Rally which is held at the end of May and also the local festival week which is held during the first week of July.
There is a regular bus service to Berwick Upon tweed and also Galashiels.
The town of Duns has two supermarkets open seven days a week generally until 10pm. There are some coffee shops, restaurants; pubs craft shops, a delicatessen, bistro and take-a ways and an off - license. There is also a chemist, Library, Newsagents, Swimming pool and two public parks. Just Outside duns there is also Putton Mill gym and Fitness center which also boasts a soft child's play area and small cafe.
