If you have not visited the Applecross Peninsula before you will like most visitors be captivated by its landscape. The Gaelic name for the area of Applecross is 'a Chomraich' which means 'The Sanctuary' and the peace and tranquillity that the Applecross peninsula offers are in abundance.
Flora's House stands on its own behind the other houses in the township, in a private elevated position on the hillside. An old stone bridge and track leads up to the cottage. The track is fine to drive on with most family cars - however please be careful when driving in dark and wet conditions, as it does get muddy. There is ample space for parking your car adjacent to the garden gate.
The cottage is warm and welcoming with an open fire in the sitting room and a wood burning stove in the dining area. This cosy holiday cottage is an ideal retreat to get away from the stress of modern day living.
The cottage had a small fenced off front garden and there is a patio with a picnic table ideal for eating outdoors. The open fire in the sitting room and the wood burning stove in the dining area are welcome after a days challenging walks. Upstairs in the cottage there are three bedrooms, sleeping five people (4 adults and 1 child).
Accommodation:
This cosy rural cottage is warm and well equipped; the kitchen has a built in electric oven, ceramic hob, fridge, freezer, toaster, slow cooker, microwave, electric kettle and a stainless steel sink unit. There is a full range of cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils in the cupboards.
The water for the whole township of Kenmore, comes from a fresh water Loch situated in the hills to the rear of the cottage. You will notice that the water is slightly peaty, which is normal to the area. We do have an ultra violet filtration system under the kitchen sink. (However - Some people like to purchase 3 - 4 very Large bottles from the supermarket for their drinking water).
The sitting room has a window seat taking full advantage of the panoramic views and is comfortably furnished with a sofa, two chairs and a T.V. with Digi box. There is a Baxi grate fire with a back boiler which will supply hot water and there is an electric immersion heater as well for back up. The dining area has seating for six at its yew dining table, it is a warm room with a wood burning stove.
One bathroom is down stairs and has a full sized bath, washbasin, w.c and heated towel rail.
Upstairs there is a charming light and airy twin bedroom. There is one double bedroom which has an en-suite bathroom. (The very small single bedroom is accessed through the double bedroom). Additionally there is a fold away travel cot in the small store room.
Within the shelter of the two porches at the front of the cottage there is a paved patio area with picnic table - so visitors can enjoy alfresco meals. To the side of the cottage is a small grass area with enough room for a couple of deck chairs to be erected in order to take in the glorious views.

Kenmore is a sheep farming community & the cottage stands amid the communal grazing grounds. The Applecross Peninsula only became accessible to road traffic in the mid 1970's. Prior to that, the small coastal communities could only be reached by sea. Although single track roads now run around the edge of the Peninsula, it remains one of the most unspoilt areas in Scotland.
A Pine Marten makes regular visits the cottage - looking for a treat from our guests. Usually visiting the cottage at night alone and occasionally with other family members. They are highly entertaining to watch when perched on the window ledge of the sitting room - enjoying small treats provided by our guests. (Extremely partial to jam sandwiches!).
Pine martens are shy creatures - but are happy to come close to the cottage when all is quiet and calm outside at night. (They have their den within the woods of Kenmore).
The Torridon-Applecross region is well known for having breath taking colours and scenery, ideal for walking, sea and fresh water fishing, climbing, bird watching. Shieldaig is 7 miles by road and has two grocery stores and a licensed hotel. Applecross is a wonderful 15 miles drive along the coastal road with fantastic views, where you will also find a pub, petrol station and excellent places to eat. The Applecross Inn specialises in the fresh sea food of the area and has recently been awarded the Scottish Dining Pub of the year!
Otters and Dolphins have occasionally been spotted swimming and playing in the sheltered sea Loch of Kenmore. Every season there is an abundance of wildlife to watch from the door step of the cottage - from Cuckoo's in the spring to flocks of field fair on their migration route in the autumn - this location is truly a nature lover's paradise! In spring, snipe are present around the grounds of the cottage. At night - the noise that the male birds make as they perform spectacular displays over the breeding sites is called ‘drumming’. This is where the male birds, following a circular route, makes a series of power dives during which the outermost tail-feathers are held out almost at right-angles to the bird's body. Feather vibration in the slipstream produces the remarkable throbbing noise known as 'drumming'. Drumming takes place throughout the breeding season and you can enjoy listening to this enchanting noise reverberating through the night air - during clear star lit nights.
