Ewelme
Ewelme is a small village near the Thames and not far from Wallingford. Many famous characters have passed through here. Alice, Duchess of Suffolk (granddaughter of Geoffrey Chaucer), died here in 1475. Nearby is the medieval Godshouse, founded by Alice and still in use today as an almshouse and chantry. In the churchyard author of Three Men in a Boat, Jerome K. Jerome, is buried.
Wallingford
Wallingford carries the marks of history back to when it was first settled in the Bronze and Iron Ages. The Roman Empire left its mark through burials, roads, coins and pottery, but it was the Anglo-Saxons who built the first town. Wallingford was one of King Alfred's'new towns', and the biggest. By 1066, when the next invader arrived, Wallingford was the leading town in Berkshire. In 1067 the Normans began to building the castle which was to dominate the town's history for the next 600 years. It was destroyed in 1652.
Wallingford is 5 miles, or 10 minutes by car.
Henley
Henley on Thames takes its name from the River Thames that flows through the town and is a beautiful and historic market town. Situated on one of the most stunning sections of the mighty river with the backdrop of the beech clad hills of the Chilterns, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty the town is unlike many others. The area is criss-crossed by countless footpaths and bridleways offering superb walking and cycling in the Henley area (just 7 miles away).
The Ridgeway Path
West of the River Thames, The Ridgeway National Trail leads across 85 miles (136km) of natural beauty. The same route has been walked since prehistoric times and throughout our history. Passing through valleys and woodlands the Ridgeway is a fantastic day out.
