Local Attractions
Here are some of our favourites.
1. Walk down to Kynance Cove and explore its beauty (best at low tide).
2. Visit the Helford River and take a boat out from St. Antony or Helford. Or walk along Frenchman's Creek, immortalised by Daphne Dumaurier in her novel of that name.
3. Step back in time and visit the Iron Age Fogou (man made cave) at Trelowarren. Then go on to the estate and visit the beautiful medieval manor house.
4. Walk down to Poltesco Cove near Kennack, then walk along the cliffs to Cadgwith and have a drink at the pub there.
5. Walk across Goonhilly Downs, a site of special scientific interest with some of the rarest plants in England on its internationally important heathland. The downs back onto Polcoverack. There are also many Bronze Age burial mounds, standing stones, hut circles and field systems to discover.
6. Try and spot the national bird of Cornwall, the Chough with its red beak. Extinct for many years it has been reintroduced near the Lizard Point and can be viewed there.
7. Have a proper Cornish Pasty, either from St. Keverne Stores, or from the internationally renowned Anne's Pasties in Lizard Village.
8. Have a proper Cornish Cream Tea at Roskilly's.
9. Visit the Five Pilchards Inn at Porthallow and see their collection of Shipwreck Artefacts rescued from the local Manacle Rocks.
10. Visit the Loe Pool near Helston, rumoured to be where Arthur threw Excalibur.
Beaches
Coverack itself is the archetypal Cornish fishing village with its harbour and expanse of golden sand at low tide. There's plenty to do on the beach from watersports to rock pooling to an old fashioned family game of cricket. At high tide crab fishing off the habour wall or simply watching the fishing boats and pleasure craft come in and out can provide plenty of entertainment!
Kennack Sands is between Coverack and the Lizard. It has two beaches, the popular Western Beach and the more secluded Eastern Beach. Western Beach now has a lifeguard service in the summer to cater for the surfers who enjoy some good waves there.
Kynance Cove near the Lizard Point has recently been hailed by the Sunday Times (Travel Section 3/8/08) as probably the best beach in the world!
"There's a random perfection about Kynance...Looking down from the clifftop, caressed by a warm, honeysuckle-scented breeze tingling with the laughter of children, you can see straight to the pale bed of the jade-green sea. In the distance, the ocean is a deep blue and all around emerald-green terraces of lush grass step down to a golden beach riven by outcrops of serpentine rock."
This stunning cove is owned by the National Trust and is beautiful at any time of the year, whatever the weather.
The area has many other beaches and coves such as Cadgwith, Gunwalloe, Mullion, Poldhu, St. Anthony to mention just a few. The beaches of Penwith and the North Coast are only a short drive away too.
