Second Seatown Cottage, Lossiemouth

Moray stretches from the peaks of the Cairngorms down to beautiful beaches and picturesque fishing villages along the Moray Firth. Much of the landscape is dominated by the River Spey, the second longest and fastest flowing river in Scotland. It also incorporates Speyside, home to around half the distilleries in Scotland. In fact, this area has the highest concentration of distilleries anywhere in the world. Many of them including such famous names as Glenfiddich, The Glenlivet, The Macallan and Glen Moray welcome visitors with more information to be found on the Malt Whisky Trail. If you are visiting over the May Bank Holiday, look out for the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival – whisky, music, food and fun, it’s a great way to meet other whisky lovers, whether you are a novice or a connoisseur!

What else to do?

• Visit the ruins of Elgin Cathedral ‘Lantern of the North’, once second in importance only to the cathedral at St Andrew’s
• Visit some of the romantic castles nearby, such as Brodie, Cawdor or Ballindalloch. If ruins are more to your liking, the dramatic ruins of Huntly castle are hugely impressive
• Get an insight into Scottish history with a local perspective at Elgin Museum, one of the oldest in the country
• See the collection of vintage cars and motor cycles at Moray Motor Museum
• Explore the ruins of Duffus Castle, with its old motte and bailey. Also incidently a great vantage point if the fighter jets are taking off from RAF Lossiemouth
• Visit The Loft Live Music, Bistro and Outdoor Activities
• Go Horse Riding
• Baxters Highland Village for some shopping, a bowl of their famous soup, and a pancake with ice cream and toffee sauce…..
• Visit the only mill in Scotland to transform fibre to finished product at Johnstons Cashmere Visitor Centre and Shop (also good for homebakes!!)
• • The kids would love the WDCS Wildlife Centre at Spey Bay and you may even spot one of the Moray Firth’s resident dolphins
• Play golf at the Championship Course at Moray Golf Club, Lossie, or Elgin Golf Club or one of the other numerous links or inland courses around the area.
• Take a day trip visiting the many picturesque fishing villages along the Banffshire Coast, including Pennan of ‘Local Hero’ fame
• Look for Nessie in the mysterious waters of Loch Ness and visit of the Highland capital of Inverness
• See where Bonnie Prince Charlie lost his fight to regain the crown for the Stuarts at the Battle of Culloden
