Towns and villages:
Portree in the north at the base of Trotternish is the largest settlement, and main service centre on the island, with a population of 1,960.[34] Broadford is on the east side of the island and Dunvegan in the north-west. Kyleakin is linked to Kyle of Lochalsh on the mainland by the Skye Bridge that spans the narrows of Loch Alsh. Uig is on the west of the Trotternish peninsula and Edinbane is located between Dunvegan and Portree.
Situated on the western edge of Skye, this small crofting hamlet is accessed by a single track road which winds through majestic mountainous scenery opening onto enchanting panoramic views towards Dunvegan Head and the Outer Hebrides. Particularly noted for its considerable variety of flora and fauna including dolphins, whales, basking sharks, seals and sea otters, this tranquil location provides an elevated position from which to enjoy the sounds of silence and to admire the glorious sunsets over the bay. There are many places of interest to visit locally including Dunvegan Castle, Flora MacDonaldâs Cottage and Neist Point Lighthouse where scenes from the film âBreaking the Wavesâ were taken. Further afield sites of geological interest include the Quiraing, Kilt Rock and the Old Man of Storr, and a selection of small, exclusive craft and pottery shops are dotted about the island.
