Hemmed in by steep cliffs and divided by the River Esk, Whitby is a hilly jumble of picturesque houses and cobbled streets, clustered on either side of its busy harbour and link by a swing bridge.
Around and about in Whitby
The famous 199 steps lead from the old town to the unique parish church of St Mary, whose rambling graveyard inspired Bram Stoker's 'Dracula', and to the evocative ruins of Whitby Abbey. There are glorious views of the town and coastline from the blustery clifftop.
Across the swing bridge, the harbour is bright with boats and traditional seaside attractions, the West Pier stretches out into the sea and the safe, clean beach of Whitby Sands arches around the bay.
Whitby is proud of its history, seafaring traditions and literary connections and there are several excellent museums and galleries to explore. The town is alive with a very active programme of events, festivals and carnivals throughout the year, including Whitby Folk Week, Whitby Folk Regatta and a week-long Captain Cook festival.
There are plenty of good places to eat, from traditional pubs and cafés to cosy bistros and bustling restaurants, including 'Britain's best fish and chips' at the famous Magpie Café. If you choose to eat in, the apartment's kitchen is well equipped and there are good food shops and supermarkets in and around the town.
Whitby is situated on one of Britains’s finest stretches of coastline, offering cliffs, fine bays, safe sandy beaches and a string of costal towns and villages to explore. Wonderful countryside lies just 10 munites inland.
To the south, old fisherman’s cottages tumble to the rocky beach of Robin Hood’s Bay, and to the north lies the quiet and pretty village of Sandsend and the quant fishing village of Staithes.
Inland, the North Yorkshire Moors offer vast areas of empty, beautiful heather moorland, sparsley dotted with sleepy villages. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs throughout the year, and is a delightful way to see some of the moorland countryside. The market towns of Pickering, Malton and Helmsley are within easy reach and the beautiful city of York is only an hour away by car.
Several of the nearby villages and towns have excellent pubs and restaurants serving imaginative home cooked food, in generous proportions. Some have attractive gardens and welcoming fires in the cooler months.
