Whether you visit for a relaxing rest away from the hustle and bustle of your busy lifestyle or you are the more adventurous type seeking adrenaline filled activities - the West Coast of Scotland has something just for you.

The Village of Shieldaig
Shieldaig is a small, pretty village sitting on the banks of Loch Shieldaig which is an offshoot of Loch Torridon. Opposite the village is Shieldaig Island, a bird sanctuary.

Shieldaig is a wonderful place to relax; you could spend all day admiring the view. It's not all peace and quiet though. For those who require a bit of nightlife Shieldaig boasts a hotel and bar!! There is a pub and shop in the village, and also the Rivendell guest house whose restaurant specialises in local seafood and is open to non-residents.

Surrounding Area
The area is ideal for walking, climbing and fishing, and the surrounding villages of Applecross and Lochcarron are within easy reach as is the resort of Gairloch.

Applecross has been made famous as the setting for the 2009 BBC 2 documentary series, 'Monty Halls' Great Escape'. The series features marine biologist and professional diver, Monty Halls as he leaves the city behind in his quest to become a crofter on the West Coast of Scotland.

The area around Shieldaig is excellent for hill walking. There are several guided walks available. Much of the area is controlled by The National Trust for Scotland. One such popular walk takes in the Balgy Falls, a pretty series of waterfalls along the River Balgy.

For more information about the area and its wildlife you can visit the Torridon Countryside Centre where The Torridon Ranger Service offers two different weekly guided walks in July and August (booking essential). The fishing village of Diabaig is well worth a visit with its sheltered harbour and salmon farm. The winding road that takes you there offers some spectacular views and is worth the trip alone.

For those who like a bit of outdoor action there is plenty to keep you busy in the Torridon area. With climbing, abseiling, kayaking, archery, clay pigeon shooting, golf, sea fishing, both river and loch fly fishing and even falconry on offer.

Loch Ness

Possibly Scotland's most famous resident, Nessie, lives in the depths of Loch Ness. The Loch is situated just a few minutes' drive south of Inverness and around 1.5 hours drive from Shieldaig. Perfect for a day out!

The Loch is over 600 ft (180m) deep in many places and up to 740 ft (225m) deep at some points. Loch Ness is also the largest Loch (or lake) in Britain by volume. There is plenty more to do around Loch Ness if Nessie doesn't come out to play!

Inverness
The City of Inverness is the gateway to the Highlands and is situated approximately 90 minutes drive away.

It is the main settlement in the Highlands and all major transport links go from here to the rest of the Highlands. 'The City in the Highlands' is a friendly, modern city with a real buzz about it.

Not only is Inverness a city full of history and culture it also boasts excellent shopping, great nightlife and fantastic restaurants. Every autumn the city hosts the Highland Feast which celebrates both Highland produce and cuisine.
