Meldon Park was built for Isaac Cookson in 1832 by the architect John Dobson and to this day, is still the home of the Cookson family. Dobson is known to have walked the grounds for a month before choosing the imposing site of the house, on a ledge above the valley of the River Wansbeck, in the northern part of an old deer park. Guests have access to the private grounds and the surrounding land which offers extensive wooded walks along the bank of the Wansbeck. Also worth a visit is the walled garden which provides fruit, flowers and vegetables for the house, some of which are grown in the traditional greenhouses. One of the garden’s specialities is its wide variety of young and mature rhododendrons, which cover the grounds with a multitude of colour in May and June.
