Canterbury Tales

Right, let’s give you the lowdown on Canterbury. It’s this cracking little city in Kent that’s been pulling in visitors for donkey’s years. If you’ve ever read Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales” (or even if you haven’t), you’ll know it’s steeped in history.

The big draw here is Canterbury Cathedral. It’s a proper whopper of a building and a UNESCO World Heritage Site to boot. It’s been standing for over 1,400 years, if you can believe it. Famous for being where Archbishop Thomas Becket met his end in 1170 – bit of a gory tale, that one.

When you’ve had your fill at the cathedral, take a wander through the city centre. It’s like stepping back in time, with all these wonky old buildings and narrow streets. The King’s Mile is worth a mooch – loads of quirky shops and cafes. And if you’re into your history, check out the ruins of St. Augustine’s Abbey.

Canterbury’s got a bit of a thing for literature too. Besides Chaucer, it was home to Christopher Marlowe and Joseph Conrad. There’s even this interactive Canterbury Tales attraction if you fancy it.

For you culture vultures, there’s the Roman Museum and the Beaney House of Art and Knowledge. Or catch a show at the Marlowe Theatre if you’re in the mood.

It’s not all old stuff though. Canterbury’s got a couple of universities, so there’s a decent bit of nightlife and some good shops. And if you need a breather from all the history, the Westgate Gardens are lovely for a stroll.

Food-wise, you’re sorted. Plenty of pubs serving local ales, and restaurants dishing up Kentish grub with a modern twist. If you’re about in autumn, the Food and Drink Festival is worth a look.

Getting there’s a doddle – just hop on a train from London and you’ll be there in about an hour. Spring or early autumn’s probably the best time to visit, when it’s not too crowded.

All in all, Canterbury’s a bit of alright. It’s got that perfect mix of old and new, and you can’t help but feel like you’re walking through a bit of English history. Give it a go – you might just end up with your own Canterbury tale to tell!
